Easy Placemat Pillow Tutorial

I am excited to share this easy and inexpensive DIY with you. Don’t worry! You don’t need to be a seamstress to be able to complete this project. I was able to make both of these accent pillows for my daughter’s room for less than $10. The trick is to use placemats for the pillow casings.
Here is What You Will NEed:
- Placemat. Make sure it has backing.
- Standard Pillow. I use the least expensive brand and usually find mine for under $3. You can make two inserts with one pillow.
- Matching Thread
- Sewing Needle
- Scissors
- Sewing Pins
- Seam Ripper(Optional)
step 1
Using a seam ripper or some small scissors unpick the stitching along the bottom side of the placemat. This will create a gap for the pillow insert. You don’t need to unpick the whole seam. I usually leave about 1 inch on each side of the placemat untouched.

STEP 2
Take your pillow and cut it vertically down the center. If you use some sharp scissors, you will easily be able to cut through the insert. You will only need one of the inserts. Save the extra insert for another pillow!
STEP 3
Remove the pillow backing and put the pillow insert into the placemat. Arrange the insert until it looks good inside of the placemat.

STEP 4
Use the sewing pins to secure the seam. Finally, sew up the edge of the seam with your needle and thread. The best stitch for this project is the Invisible Stitch.

STEP 5
You’re all done! Now send me a picture. I would love to see your Placemat Pillows!
